What is a Hot Water Heat Pump?
A hot water heat pump is a very efficient water heating device. It uses a small amount of electricity to produce up to four times more heat energy. So by connecting a high-performance heat pump to your existing hot water cylinder you can divide your hot water electrical consumption by up to four. Unlike a solar geyser, a heat pump is not directly dependent on the sun and therefore it can operate day and night, winter and summer, ensuring the highest possible saving and piping hot water 24/7.
How does a heat pump work?
A heat pump works like an air conditioning unit in reverse. It extracts heat from the ambient air surrounding it, enabling it to heat the refrigerant which is then compressed causing it to get even hotter. This is then run through a heat exchanger in which the water is heated. The refrigerant is then allowed to expand again, thus cooling it down and enabling it to again absorb heat from the surrounding air. So only a little electricity is used to run a fan and compressor while the heat energy is provided indirectly by the sun.

How Hot Water Heat Pumps Work
Heat Extraction
- A high-performance heat pump pulls heat from the air (air-source) or the ground (ground-source) and transfers it to the refrigerant inside the system.
- The refrigerant absorbs this heat and turns into a gas.
Compression
- The refrigerant gas is compressed, increasing its temperature further.
Heat Transfer To Water
- The hot refrigerant gas flows through a heat exchanger, transferring its heat to the water in a storage tank.
- As the refrigerant cools down, it turns back into a liquid and the process repeats.
Energy Efficiency
- Since they primarily move heat rather than generate it, heat pumps can be up to three or four times more efficient than conventional electric water heaters.
- For every unit of electricity used, the heat pump can deliver 3-4 units of heat energy, resulting in significant energy savings.
Key Features and Benefits of Hot Water Heat Pumps
Energy Efficiency:
- COP (Coefficient of Performance): Most high-performance heat pumps have a COP of around 3-4, meaning they are 300-400% more efficient than traditional electric water heaters.
- They use ambient heat from the environment, so they require less electricity compared to resistance-based water heaters.
Lower Operating Costs:
- Though the upfront cost of a high-performance heat pump system is higher than a conventional water heater, the lower operational costs make them economical in the long run.
- Savings can be even more significant if combined with solar energy to power the high-performance heat pump.
Environmental Impact:
- By reducing the amount of electricity or gas required to heat water, heat pumps help decrease carbon emissions.
- They are a sustainable solution for households and commercial applications looking to reduce their reliance on fossil fuels.
Versatility:
- High-performance heat pumps can operate efficiently in a variety of climates, although air-source heat pumps are most effective in warmer environments.
- They can be paired with solar PV systems or solar thermal systems for greater sustainability.
Consistent Hot Water Supply:
- High-performance heat pumps typically include a storage tank to ensure a steady supply of hot water.
- Some systems offer hybrid options that include electric resistance heaters for backup during extreme cold or peak demand.
Quiet Operation:
- Modern high-performance heat pumps are designed for quiet operation, making them suitable for installation in or near living spaces.
Types of Hot Water Heat Pumps
Air-Source Heat Pumps:
- Extract heat from the surrounding air and use it to heat water.
- Typically installed indoors (e.g., in basements or utility rooms), where they can also help dehumidify and cool the air.
- Best suited for regions with moderate climates; their efficiency drops in extremely cold temperatures.
Ground-Source Heat Pumps (Geothermal):
- Extract heat from the ground, which maintains a relatively constant temperature year-round.
- More expensive to install due to the need for underground piping but highly efficient, even in colder climates.

Solar Water Panels vs. Heat Pumps vs. Solar PV vs. Gas
The cost of electricity, stability of the national grid and the awareness to sustainable living have forced many consumers to turn to renewable energy technology for heating water. The national building regulations also require that at least 50% of water heating be done with something other than an electrical element. As with many products on the market, one can find a considerable number of contradicting claims with regards to the different technologies. Many of these claims are nothing more than marketing jabber and opinions and have no facts behind them. At ITS we have therefore decided to try and shed some light on the main water heating technologies and the saving that can be achieved.
